For regular updates on sporting achievements and opportunities please read the weekly newsletter here and make sure to follow the Wakatipu High School Sports Facebook.

There are a wide range of both individual and team sports offered at Wakatipu High School and all students are encouraged to be active and lead a healthy lifestyle as well as participate and contribute towards an extracurricular activity in the school. Sport at WHS is successfully delivered either within school or in partnership with many local clubs in the Wakatipu Basin. These clubs help to cater for secondary school sport by providing coaching, facilities and equipment.

Students compete in a mix of Southland, Central Otago and Otago Secondary School Sport competitions. Each code also has their own representative pathways in either Southland or Otago depending on regional affiliations within the sport. Many of our students and teams compete at South Island and New Zealand Secondary School events and tournaments throughout the year.

WHS is determined to create and provide opportunities for all students who want to participate and compete in sport and physical activity. We provide participation, development and performance pathways so students can engage at their preferred level and reach their potential in their chosen codes.
Athlete Development Opportunities
New Zealand Alpine Ski Academy
Wakatipu High School offers a unique programme that allows snow sport athletes the opportunity to train full time from mid-June through to the end of September.

WHS has partnered with a number of snow sport academies/providers to allow students to reach their maximum athletic potential while pursuing their academic goals. This long-established programme supports athletes to train on the mountain every weekend and mid-week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with teacher support to help maintain their academic studies with extended school hours outside of training.

This high performance academy allows for a flexible academic schedule for best on-snow training. For more information about QAST or to register your interest visit www.qast.org.nz

Athletic Development Programme
The Wakatipu High School Athletic Development Programme (ADP) is an opportunity for students to gain further knowledge and support to improve fundamental movement skills and personal athletic performance. The ADP is strength and conditioning training based on long term athletic development models and aims to ensure all students are capable and proficient to operate in a performance training environment.

The ADP is open to all students who seek to improve their personal performance and outcomes in sport and physical activity. It is run each term for eight weeks, on site at WHS, twice a week in the mornings. To find out more about the Athletic Development Programme please click here.
Exchanges
Wakatipu High School has two winter exchanges on offer, the first with James Hargest High School in Invercargill, and the second with Mount Aspiring College in Wanaka. These exchanges are fiercely competitive and are always close battles to see which school triumphs as the overall winner.  The 2021 James Hargest exchange was a 6-6 draw and the Mt Aspiring exchange was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID.

Celebrating Success
Each year the Wakatipu High School Sports Blues awards celebrate both the achievements and service of our students in the sporting realm. This is the highest form of acknowledging sporting excellence at WHS. This annual prize giving is held in late October.

Please click here for a full list of previous major Sports Blues Award Winners.

Summer and winter sports assemblies are run at the end of each season to celebrate the achievements and successes of individual athletes and teams. The weekly newsletter has detailed results and achievements from each event, competition and tournament attended by WHS students and the Wakatipu High School Sports Facebook page is up to date with all the latest action.

New Zealand Representatives and Titles
Wakatipu High School is proud to boast a number of New Zealand representatives and title holders who are past and present students. Congratulations to all of these athletes for their hard work, recognition and success in being named to represent New Zealand for their various sports and/or for winning a New Zealand title.

Please click here for a list of all NZ representatives and title holders.
