Overview
Many students at WHS enjoy easy access to the local mountains and take part in recreational skiing and snowboarding on a weekly basis.
We are proud to have a number of New Zealand's top secondary school-aged alpine skiers, freeskiers and snowboarders. Some of our top snow sports athletes have gone on to represent New Zealand at the highest level, including former students Cool Wakushima and Alice Robinson, who both competed at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Both were members of the WHS Winter Sports Academy.
Competitive snow sport athletes can opt into the Winter Sports Academy, which enables students to train during school time and provides academic and pastoral support after school three days a week during the winter months.
There are a variety of alpine, freeski and snowboard training programmes based at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or Cardrona that students can opt into or be selected for. Students can also compete for WHS at the Otago/Southland Secondary School Champs and the SISS Champs.
QAST (Queenstown Alpine Ski Team) runs in conjunction with the Alpine Ski Academy at WHS. Ski racing is on weekends.
