 English and Media Studies

Students at Wakatipu High School are required to do English in Years 9 & 10 and it is strongly recommended and expected that students study English in Years 11 & 12.

Students in Years 9, 10 & 11 will be placed in the class most appropriate for learning based on standardised tests, assessments and observed teacher judgement.

Junior English
Junior English at Wakatipu High School encompasses Years 9 and 10 where students will continue to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of language in all its varieties: written, spoken and visual. Being a confident and competent language user is one of the most valuable skills students can have.

The focus in Junior English is on the engagement with, and enjoyment of a wide variety of texts and the development of skills and confidence in the two interconnected strands of Listening, Reading, Viewing; and Speaking, Writing and Presenting. The Year 9 and 10 programmes encourage enjoyment, breadth and variety. Students will be exposed to a balance between the study of local literature (New Zealand) and the wider heritage of English and World Literature.

Senior English
Critically literate citizens are the foundation of a successful society. Everyone must have the ability and opportunity to read, understand and enjoy a broad range of texts. Students of English at Wakatipu High School will be equipped with the skills to confidently express their thoughts, feelings and opinions.

Students’ understanding of the world can be shaped through their engagement with, and understanding of written, spoken and visual language. In the English Learning Area, we aim to support the development of young people who will choose to engage with, and enjoy, texts of all types throughout their whole lives. The study of language and literature is fundamental to each individual’s development.
The Treaty of Waitangi is an integral part of our curriculum. Students of English will acknowledge the Maori identity and its unique place in our society and within the New Zealand curriculum. Students will explore a range of Maori texts and perspectives in their programmes.
How is Senior English Structured?
The differentiated courses offered within the English Learning Area are designed to support students individual learning needs and pathways.
Media Studies
Media Studies at Wakatipu High School is an exciting new course that combines theory with the practical planning and production of media.

Media Studies examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities, and cultures and how media products are produced, controlled, and distributed.

Through Media Studies students gain the knowledge and skills to conceive, plan, design and make media products that engage audiences.
